This retaining wall is replacing an old dry stack rock wall. The original wall was full of weeds and collapsing, pouring gravel on the driveway.
After dismantling the fence I dug out enough material to build the wall and install a 12" drain chimney. There is a 3" perforated pipe running along the bottom of the wall to collect any excess water and drain it through the wall and into the California drain at the bottom of the driveway.
I also encountered the house main water line as building the wall. By cutting a pvc pipe lengthwise I was able to get the sleeve around the house water supply and protect it. This technique means the home owner will be able to perform maintenance on this vital supply without dismantling the new wall.
The wall is reinforced using concrete and rebar where the wall meets the house, and the fence posts have been cemented into the wall giving strength to both the wall and the fence.
Finally I cut the driveway parallel to the wall and have installed concrete. Once the weather improves I will return and install a rubber surface material to match the existing surface. Once completed, the wall will look like it was always there.
