lawn sprinkler head watering grassSprinkler Blowouts in the Cowichan Valley

Grounded Irrigation and Lawncare provides irrigation winterization — sprinkler system blowouts — across the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, including Crofton, Chemainus, Duncan, Maple Bay, Ladysmith, Cobble Hill, and Mill Bay — plus the WestShore.

When temperatures drop below freezing, any water left sitting in your irrigation lines expands as it freezes. A fall blowout clears the whole system with compressed air so there is nothing left in the lines to freeze.

What our irrigation blow out service includes

  • Full blowout with our commercial tow-behind air compressor — the air volume needed to clear a system properly, not a shop compressor.
  • The mainline cleared of standing water.
  • Every zone valve opened and blown out.
  • Each sprinkler head run until it is blowing dry air.

Winterizing prices

$100 for systems with 6 zones or less, plus $15 per additional zone. Prices are plus GST.

Winterizing FAQ

Why does my irrigation system need to be blown out before winter?

Water left in the lines freezes and expands, which can split pipes and fittings, crack valve manifolds and backflow devices, and break sprinkler heads. The damage usually stays hidden until spring start-up, and the repairs cost far more than a blowout.

When should I winterize my sprinkler system on Vancouver Island?

Before the first hard frost — in the Cowichan Valley, BC that typically arrives around mid-November. We run our winterizing week October 20–24 so every system is cleared with time to spare.

What does a sprinkler blowout involve?

We connect a commercial tow-behind air compressor to your irrigation system, clear the mainline, then open each zone in turn until every valve and sprinkler head is blowing dry air. Once the water is out, there is nothing left in the system for a freeze to damage.

What happens if I skip winterizing?

If water is left in the system through a freeze, split fittings, cracked valves and damaged backflow devices are common results — and they usually are not discovered until the system is pressurized again in spring, delaying your start-up while parts are repaired or replaced.

What if I miss the winterizing week?

We can still blow out your system outside the October 20–24 week — but at double the regular price ($200 for systems with 6 zones or less, plus $30 per additional zone, plus GST). Grouping blowouts into one dedicated week is what keeps the standard price down: the cost of renting the commercial compressor is spread across a full week of bookings, while a one-off visit outside that week carries the compressor cost on its own.

What areas do you serve?

We winterize irrigation systems throughout the Cowichan Valley — Crofton, Chemainus, Duncan, Maple Bay, Ladysmith, Cobble Hill, and Mill Bay — and we also serve the WestShore.
